We had a great meeting in Nyack on Saturday.   Thank you to Kevin for opening his home, and what a beautiful home I have to add.  It is located across from the Hudson River and the home is to die for.  Its an historic home that’s been kept in mint condition and retains all its original character, Kevin was our tour guide as he showed us the house (they don’t make homes like that anymore).  Kevin has created a prepper oasis and has his bases covered.  We could all learn a lot from him.

Victor gave a demonstration of square foot gardening (www.woodlotfarms.com), even though the temperatures were predicted to hit 100 degrees.  Thank you Victor, to work in that heat isn’t easy.  Luckily Kevin had thought out the day well and kept us working in the shade and once the garden frame was built it could be moved to a sunny spot.

Then when we were finished with the garden frame we stopped to enjoy a nice lunch (everyone brought something).  Then we had a short meeting.  There were quite a few ideas for some future meetings.  Then after we were pretty much done the clouds started to come in and threatened with a few raindrops which got us all moving to clean everything up.

Thank you to everyone that came out to brave the heat wave.  It wasn’t that bad though because we were at the perfect spot being surrounded by big shade trees and being across from the river breeze.

Have you started getting your garden ready for this year?

My husband has been getting the different garden sites ready around in the yard and also decided to expand one.  Last weekend I got the seeds started in the peat packs and some of the plants started popping up after only 2 days. Now I am hoping for the warm weather to finally stay so I can get them outside before the cat, dogs or myself knock any more of them over.  This year I’m including asparagus although from what I hear it takes about 3 years before you get a crop.  I am also going to cheat and get a few tomato plants from the local nearby farm, although I am starting some from seeds.

I’ve already planted some sunflower seeds outside… my biggest challenge every year because the squirrels or the groundhog seem to get to them before they are completely grown.  So this year I’m planting a lot more hoping we can all share.

I’ve added a lot of seeds to my seed vault this year and made sure I marked each envelope (I’m famous for not marking the seeds).

Its such a great feeling watching something grow from a seed that you planted.  Its an even nicer feeling when you get to put that food on your table.
